35mm Film

I have been busy working away on photography, both digital and analog photography.

Here is some recent 35mm film photography, I had scanned in.

AK and I, exploring (#19).
Ilford FP4 plus, 35mm film.
Taken in mid 2017.

AK and I, exploring the city.
Kodak Gold 200, 35mm film.

Taken in late 2017.

These next ones are triple exposures, where I took three images, one over the other (all in camera). Crop and post editing processing (slight tweaking) done on the computer.

Not sure what happened here, but my 35mm scanner can't seem to handle too much saturated color in film negatives and sometimes does weird, unexpected things.

Brisbane

AK and I went to Brisbane (and Nth Stradbroke Island) for a couple of days. It was beautiful.
Here are some photos I took.

The city after the rain.

After a recent couple of days of rain and constant drizzle, AK and I went into the city and took our cameras. I am often captivated by reflections and/or shadows.
Here are a few images I took of wet Melbourne, its reflections and shadows.

AK is so cheeky getting in my shots! I think he secretly loves having his photo taken!

These next few images are about the play between shadow and light, negative space, lines and texture.

A 40th and another opportunity to see my exhibition.

AK turned forty, this past weekend. I baked him a cake sized brownie. He loves chocolate and brownies! We went out to dinner that night and had a good time.  Here are some photos from the morning:

Posing with some of the items I gave him.

Lighting the candles (yep, we had already started eating the brownie):

Posing with the 'cake' and wearing a Donald Trump branded tie, his family gave him.

Now enough about AK and more about me!

My exhibition has a final viewing at Balkon Art Incubator, here is some info and some photos!

This is Sunday is the final opportunity to see the exhibition- "Seminal and non-seminal works", at Balkon Art Incubator.

Date: Sunday 20th of March
Time: 10am - 1pm
Location: 635 Plenty Rd, Preston (Near Tyler st).

Some info about the show, from my artist statement:

" Over the last two years Matthew has been exploring Bricolage through the manipulation of translucent materials. The works in this exhibition were created using this technique. Much of Matthew’s work is centered on finding beauty in spaces or items which are unwanted or discarded. The series ‘Seminal and non-seminal works’ sees Matthew making a shift from passive observer of beauty to active participant in its creation.

‘Seminal and non-Seminal works’ explores several themes. The themes are:

-how items 'to hand' can be used in the creation of beauty,

-the artist’s own personal exploration of how chosen materials are used to represent the joy of life (and its creation) and

-How the experience each viewer has with each piece of work can be affected by the emotional meaning they have attached or imbued in the items used."

I do hope that you will be able to attend. Please feel free to pop in, say hello and bring your friends. Please feel free to also forward this invite those whom you think would be interested. It is important to note that these works are different to my usual abstract photographs and are mixed media works. Some aspects of the show may be confronting for some people. Please do not hesitate to contact me in need.

best regards,

matthew schiavello.

A walk with AK- Nov 2014

Having a photographer as a date/partner or friend, is never easy. You can never just go for a walk, as the camera usually comes along and a 30 minute walk becomes an hour.  Here are some photos from a couple of walks I took with AK last November. A few images of AK waiting for me are thrown in, to show his states of exasperation as I became excited about things to take photographs of.

"AK, look at the patterns these powerlines are making!"

"AK, hold up, you are too fast, look at this cool stuff to photograph!"

"AK, I am almost done, just a few more shots..oh wow, have you seen this??!!!

"AK!, Look at the moon through the power poles and lines! Wow, I have to get a shot of this!"

"AK, Look at the moon and the clouds!, I have to get a photo of this!"

"Hey AK, how interesting is this cracked and painted Footpath?!!!  I have to take some photos of it!":

AK's response:

Photos, film and oh, I destroyed your images!

I thought it would be fun to share a few new film photos and some photos which are not mine, but AK's. He sent them to me and I think I misunderstood what he wanted from me, as I messed about with them in photoshop and he didn't particularly like the outcomes, in fact I think his reaction was akin to me destroying his images! Talk about overreact!.... Anyway, he has given me permission to share them, so fear not. You dear reader, may be blessed with good taste, like moi! and may like my interpretations as much as I do... and yes my tongue is planted firmly in my cheek ;-)

Firstly, here is my fun, pop art inspired "Gum on a disposable coffee cup (in pink)."

Here is AK's boring original version:

Next is my subtle enhancement and crop, of a piece I have called "The artist deep in thought."

Here is AK's wider and slightly less interesting original:

Here are some film images I took earlier in the year, but just scanned in now.

Positive light

Abbotsford Convent.
AK never stays still long enough for me to able to correctly manually focus the camera! I think he sabotages my film shots on purpose ;-)

Lastly, I wanted AK to hold his hands up but he didn't understand what I meant, so I had to model for him:

"The birds will sing for us." for A. K.

"The birds will sing for us."  for A. K.

The birds will sing for us.

They will say what you cannot.

What gets stuck in your throat,

will easily flow through theirs

and their song,

will be as beautiful,

as your intent.

For my love, who loves birds.

A.K. and I at TarraWarra Museum of Art

Recently, A.K. took me to TarraWarra Museum of Art. I had never been there before and had a great time looking at some really interesting pieces and taking photos. This gallery is worth a day trip out Healesville way, to see it. Here are some photos from that day.

Some views from inside the gallery, looking out:

A.K. decided to have fun in an installation that was essentially Styrofoam balls being blown about by big fans.. just like snow..  He got those little balls everywhere.. and I mean everywhere!

A really interesting decal was placed over an external window, that made the view outside onto the country,  look like a beautiful dot painting.

Lastly, something I saw on the way back to the car.
