Spring days 2022 exhibition, and fundraiser for Sri Lanka.

I am really excited to be part of this special group show put together by @offthekerb

The exhibition ‘Spring days' runs from 8-22 September 2022.

A portion of all sales goes to support those in Sri Lanka.

My image (top of this post) 'Spring days 2022'. is a mixed media version of my image - Flora #31, July 2022. This was a Multiple exposure on Velvia 100, 35mm film. I then printed it on matte archival paper and used goauche and watercolur to tone down the distracting areas. It is framed and a unique piece.

Working away

A friend recently asked if I was in a creative slump as he hadn't seen much output from me.
I smiled and told him that I am busy working away, creating new work and exploring new mediums (I am also posting regularly on instagram, Ello and tumblr).

I have taken so many photos, that I am still slowly working my way through images I captured at the start of 2017, as well as working my way through mixed-media pieces I created in 2015 & 2016!

Here are some things I have been working on recently.
.
"Middle age, an autoportrait. Also known as- trying out my old 20mm film lens, on my full frame camera."  I took this as i decided to brush the cobwebs of an old 20mm film lens I had. This image is only from a few weeks ago.

“I lie about the size of my cock. I say it is much bigger than it is, it makes me feel like I am more of a man, stronger, more powerful.”

This piece from a series in Feb 2017,  aims to explore aspects of toxic masculinity. .

Seminal and non-seminal works exhibition.

I have an exhibition opening this Friday! Here is some info on it and some photos from us setting up/installing the show!

AK and I, taken by Christine Georgiou.

"Seminal and non-seminal works"

Date: Friday 4th of March
Time: 6.30pm - 8.30pm
Location: 635 Plenty Rd, Preston (Near Tyler st).

This show will only be available for viewing on two occasions.
The opening, or an extra viewing day on Sunday the 20th of March from 10am - 1pm.
This second day is handy for all my friends south of the Yarra.

Some info from my Artist Statement:

" Over the last two years Matthew has been exploring Bricolage through the manipulation of translucent materials. The works in this exhibition were created using this technique. Much of Matthew’s work is centered on finding beauty in spaces or items which are unwanted or discarded. The series ‘Seminal and non-seminal works’ sees Matthew making a shift from passive observer of beauty to active participant in its creation.

‘Seminal and non-Seminal works’ explores several themes. The themes are:
-How items 'to hand' can be used in the creation of beauty,
-The artist’s own personal exploration of how the joy of life and its creation are represented through his choice of materials,  and
-How the experience each viewer has with each piece of work can be affected by the emotional meaning they have attached or imbued in the items used."

I do hope that you will be able to attend. There will be complimentary drinks at the opening. Please feel free to invite those whom you think would be interested. I have attached the flyer in PDF form and two images from the series below. Please note that these works are different to my usual abstract photographs and are mixed media works. Some aspects of the show may be confronting for some people. Please do not hesitate to contact me in need.

best regards,
matthew schiavello.

Photos, christmas and all that jazz.......

"It's coming on Christmas
They're cutting down trees
They're putting up reindeer
And singing songs of joy and peace
Oh I wish I had a river I could skate away on "
Joni Mitchell wrote and sang this ( 'River' off the lp 'Blue') and I kind feel it... I wish I could skate away from all of this madness, the giving, gifting and everyone playing happy families... when none of us really are.

In brighter news, I am working on scanned work for my March exhibition. I'll share some of  what I am working on below and some of the recent  photos I have been taking. I'll also finish on this festive note: Wherever you are, be safe and happy, may the new year bring all you need.

Art, photography and the suburbs

I have decided to take some art lessons. I have never studied art, aside from high school art, which I wasn't very good at.  I have some ideas I have sketched out, but cannot make happen, so the time is right to learn some technique and develop some skills!
Here is a line drawing  I did at my first lesson. It is of a lily.

I am also working on some new ideas with my mixed media. Here are a couple if things I am messing about with:

‘Flora #2′, scanned 24/09/15:

‘Orange, yellow and red ('Flora #45)’, Scanned 21/09/15:

'Flora #12 280915':

 'Flora #01 280915':

lastly, here are a couple of photos from some Urban Walks I took with AK.

‘The suburbs #19′:
